인류를 위한 최초의 성경
1534년에 최초로 인쇄된 마틴 루터의 성경은 최초의 독일어 완역 성경 출판물이었을 뿐만 아니라, 기독교 역사에서도 중대한 사건이었다. 당시의 성경들이 라틴어로 쓰여져 소수의 식자층만이 읽을 수 있었던 것에 대한 혁명적인 시도로 평범한 일반인들이 읽을 수 있도록 독일어로 완역한 이 책은 '프로테스탄티즘' 이라는 새로운 종교를 탄생시키는 중요한 원인이 된다. 루터의 성경은 오늘날 독일어 권에서 가장 많이 읽히고있다. 성경의 해인 2003년을 기념해서 Taschen에서는 독창적인 책을 출간했다. 이 책은 구약, 신약을 포함하여 총 1800페이지 이상으로 되어있고, 2권으로 나뉘어서 출간되었다. Taschen의 Luther Bible의 그림은 원서의 칼라 도판으로부터 꼼꼼하게 조판되었다. 원래의 성경책과 똑같이 만들기 위해서 Lucas Cranach의 세심한 목판화와 정교한 장식을 모두 칼라와 금으로 인쇄했다. Stephan Fussel의 소개글에서는 루터의 삶, 그의 성경의 의미에 대한 토론, 삽화에 대한 세세한 설명등을 다루고 있다.

Stephan Fussel is Director of the Institute of the History of the Book at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, and holder of the Gutenberg Chair at the same university. He is President of the Willibald Pirckheimer Society for Renaissance and Humanist Studies, member of the board of the International Gutenberg Society and editor of the annual Gutenberg Jahrbuch and Pirckheimer Jahrbuch. He has published widely on early printing, on bookselling and publishing from the 18th to the 20th century, and on the future of communications.
